Collage Illustratior-Eduardo Recife

EDUARDO RECIFE is an artist/illustrator, graphic designer, and typographer from Brazil. He is the man behind Misprinted Type, a well known website focusing on his personal works (collages and drawings) and his world wide famous typefaces. Recife's clients include such notable media outlets as The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, HBO, Showtime and several others. I think old graphics were unbelievably more beautiful than what we have today. It was more poetic, and the colors were more attractive. Throughout my whole life I've liked old stuff. When I was younger, I used to get worn clothes and shoes from my older cousins, and I loved it! Even today, I am really fond of vintage (second-hand) t-shirts, etc. Besides all this, I think that the vintage, worn look gives a sensation it was touched by the hands of time or by the artist. Somehow clean lines from the computer bother me, because it feels so cold and mechanical.

 The collages Eduardo Recife creates are beautiful and soft, and the type he has created almost seems to take on a very different tone from that. His type covers a plethora of styles: ornate vintage fonts, extravagant distressed script and dirty grungy sans-serif type. Within that diversity of style, there are fonts that can be harsh and uninviting at times, yet strong, and meaningful. Each stroke in his typefaces evoke a specific style and meaning, each typeface working within their own realm of design. Oddly enough, some of those evocative fonts can be paired smoothly with the collages Eduard creates. The two styles mesh within the workspace and compliment each other. Ultimately this makes sense because both aspects are coming from the same brain of the artist, and thus the thought process for both the typeface and the collage would be similar.

The term pin up refers to a photographic and illustration style which is printed and meant to be pinned up on a wall. This style originated at the beginning of the 20th century but became very popular during World War II as millions of young men spent weeks and months away from their sweethearts and longed for an escape. The pin up girl has became an indelible part of modern popular culture and endures to this day. In fact, thanks to the internet, the pin up girl is more popular than ever and only a few clicks away. The style is classic and nostalgic with a nod of appreciation to the fashion, makeup, hair and a cute campy attitude. We love it.

So what pin up styles are the most popular? Well there are a handful of popular looks that have been around for decades. These looks haven't changed all that much and seem to endure as the times change and change again. Looks such as the Retro Swimsuit, The Hotrod Girl, The Sailor Girl, The Army Girl and the Housewife are pin up looks that endure because they have a simple recognizable theme and celebrate youth and a classic beauty.

Fahion Illustrator-Cecilia Carlstedt

 Cecilia Carlstedt was born in Stockholm in 1977, and was always interested in illustration, even from a very early age. She received her degree in Graphic Design and Image Making from London College of Communication, after which she returned to her home town to start her career as a full-time illustrator. She has been commissioned by a wide variety of clients, but her beautifully composed, stylish and colourful work has naturally endeared her to the world of fashion. She likes to combine drawing with various media for a rich and unpredictable expression, and finds inspiration in fashion and art - and especially in exploring secluded places with her camera.

Fashion Illustrator-David Downton

UK-based artist David Downton randomly started fashion illustration in 1996, when he was commissionned by a magazine to draw at the Paris haute couture shows : “It blew me away! I was totally unprepared. Couture really is a parallel universe – I’ve heard it described as the kingdom of indulgence, which is true, but it is also extremely inspiring for an artist or illustrator ; the world’s most beautiful women, designers working without constraint – the sheer theatricality of it all – there is a lot to draw“. Since then, Downton’s works have been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Visionaire, The Daily Telegraph. Using a combination of classic techniques, such as watercolor, gouache and coloured inks on paper, he has mastered in celebrity portraits, with a commissioned-portraits portfolio including Dita Von Teese, Erin O’Connor, Anna Piaggi, Lily Cole, Catherine Bailey, just to name a few.
